Inter-domain router placement and traffic engineering

چکیده
The Internet is organized as an interconnection of separate administrative domains called Autonomous Systems (AS). The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the de facto standard for controlling the routing of traffic across different ASs. It supports scalable distribution of reachability and routing policy information among different ASs. In this paper, we study a network design problem which determines (1) the optimal placement of border router(s) within a domain and (2) the corresponding interand intra-domain traffic patterns within an AS. Practical constraints imposed by BGP and other standard shortest-path-based intra-domain routing protocols are considered. The problem is formulated as a variant of the uncapacitated network design problem (UNDP). While it is feasible to use a brute-force, integer-programming-based approach for tackling small instances of this problem, we have resorted to a dual-ascent approximation approach for mid/large-scale instances. The quality of the approximation approach is evaluated in terms of its computational efficiency and network cost sub-optimality. Sensitivity analysis w.r.t. various network/traffic parameters are also conducted. We then describe how one can apply our optimization results to better configure BGP as well as other intra-domain routing protocols. This serves as a first-step towards the auto-configuration of Internet routing protocols, BGP in particular, which is “well-known” for its tedious and error-prone configuration needs.

Traffic Engineering for Inter-domain Quality of Service
We present a model for inter-domain traffic engineering with end-to-end quality of service support, focusing particularly on bandwidth guarantees. We address the problem of egress router selection, which involves the selection of the egress router for customer traffic towards the destination prefixes taking into account end-to-end bandwidth constraints . We also consider performance optimisatio...
متن کاملAlternatives to Redistribution Communities in Inter-domain traffic Engineering
Today’s internet routing mainly concentrates on controlling the ingress and egress traffic which occurs through border routers. There are different ways by which we can control the traffic between autonomous systems. In most cases redistribution communities are used for the control over traffic engineering. In this paper we focus on alternative approaches like Multi Protocol Label Switching (MP...
متن کاملAchieving Fast BGP Reroute with Traffic Engineering Using Multiple Routing Planes
In today's BGP routing architecture, traffic delivery is in general based on single path selection paradigms. The lack of path diversity hinders the support for resilience, traffic engineering and QoS provisioning across the Internet. Some recently proposed multi-plane extensions to BGP offer a promising mechanism to enable diverse inter-domain routes towards destination prefixes. Based on thes...

This paper presents the INTERMON dynamic monitoring architecture for spatio-temporal QoS and traffic mapping in inter-domain environment considering inter-domain routing (BGP-4 protocol) behaviour. The monitoring architecture is based on the collection of different types of time series data: QoS parameter time series data ,border router traffic data and BGP-4
متن کاملMulti-objective Egress Router Selection Policies for Inter-domain Traffic with Bandwidth Guarantees
The next generation Internet is designed to accommodate flows that span across multiple domains with quality of service guarantees, in particular bandwidth. In this context, destinations for inter-domain traffic may be reachable through multiple egress routers within a domain. In this paper, we formulate a bandwidth guaranteed egress router selection problem. The objective is to, for each aggre...
